EXHIBIT OVERVIEW
The exhibit is divided into three sections:

STRANGERS IN THE CITIES deals with the affects of China's liberalized economic policies that have sparked profound economic and social transformations on all levels of Chinese society. Issues affecting out - of- work farmers fleeing into the cities, the changing culture of urban dwellers, and questions of identity and self expression are explored.
POWER POLITICS examines the Chinese government policies on various issues, i.e., one child families, the demolition of traditional Chinese structures to make way for modern western-style buildings; public health policies on pollution, SARS, Aids, smoking, etc; the average citizen's anxiety over the communist government's politics of repression, and the backlash against communism in general are addressed.
THE MCDONALDIZATION OF CHINA delves into issues of capitalism and consumerism, and the sweeping diffusion of American culture and products into China. Topics examined are the ambivalence towards western consumer products such as cell phones, Mac Donald's, Coke, music, movies, etc; the affects of Chinese ¨C made counterfeit band- name products on China's economy and society, and the anxiety over out -of -control consumerism rampant in China today. The social and cultural consequences of globalization, including the rise of nationalism, are also addressed.
